Phaung Hour

January 12, 1932 — May 24, 2025

Phaung Hour, referred to many as, Ama, gained her angel wings on May 24, 2025, surrounded by all those that loved her dearly. She spent 93 wonderful years spreading joy to all around her. Most of her time was spent taking care of her children and grandchildren.

Ama was born on January 12, 1932, to BY Zi Hoa (Father) and Oang Weillan (Mother) in China. She was the first born of 3 children (Phou Siv Yong and Check Siv Oi). Her family later migrated to Cambodia, date and year are unknown.

In her early 20’s, Ama was a business owner in the fishing industry, managing several employees. She spoke multiple languages including Chinese dialects (Teo Chew and Hai Nam), Cambodian (Khmer), Thai and Vietnamese. In 1959, she married the love of her life, Kav Ang. Fast forward to the late 70s, during the Pol Pot Khmer Rouge Regime, Ama and her husband successfully escaped to the border of Thailand with their children – Tina Uk (adopted niece), Khim Nancy Ang, Kouy Ang, Tith Ang, Kim Lay Ang, Lay Huat Ang, Dara Ang and Kim Lang Ang. They resided in a refugee camp in Thailand until they were sponsored as a family to Houston, Texas in 1978. They had to establish a new life in a foreign country with their growing family. They welcomed their youngest, Christy Ang, in Houston in 1978. Ama unexpectedly lost her husband in 1981 so she had to navigate establishing life in a new country as a single mother, who spoke very little English.

Ama loved cooking and spending time with her family. She always insisted on hosting so her kids and grandkids could come over and feast. Everyone loved her fried rice! She always talked about how much her children and family meant to her. Ama would always call or Facetime, no matter the time of day. Her grandkids can attest to this. Ama’s family was the most important and greatest achievement in her life, although she would frequently get names mixed up. She sometimes struggled to pronounce English names so had cute nicknames for her American grandkids.

She is survived by her loving sister, Check Siv Oi, who lives in France. Her children, (Tina Uk, Khim Nancy Ang, Kouy, Ang, Tith Ang, Kim Lay Ang, Kim Lang Ang and Christy Ang), daughter-in-law, (Tithara Ang), son-in-law, (Andrew Hammond), 23 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Ama was preceded in death by her parents, husband (Kav Ang), sister (Phou Siv Yong), children (Dara Ang & Lay Huat Ang), and granddaughter (Sendy Tran).

Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate her life finding comfort knowing that she is at peace and watching over us.
